So I've bought a couple templates from from the same store, I'll withhold their name for the moment at least to protect the guilty; but the bottom line is I've been pretty unhappy.
Both were CRE Loaded B2B Templates, one was for a 6.2.09 store. The other for a 6.3.3 store.
Both had their bugs that I had to work with support to fix that were unique to that specific template. I also had some very similar/identical issues with both of them. Basically it comes down to much of the appearance and functionality of the template being hard-coded instead of allowing you to use the CRE Admin's Design tools to customize the appearance of the template. The ability to do something as simple as narrow or widen the cart for example. Or narrow/widen the infoboxes. These controls were inactive in the admin and just did nothing. You could change the parameters to no effect. Contact support and find out that they had taken control away from the admin and hard-coded this stuff into the template.
To me, a template is a starting point. I buy a template, tweak it a bit so it won't look just like your store if you buy the same template (maybe tweak the color on the graphics, change the font and background colors, etc). I don't make major changes, as if I was good at that I'd just design it from scratch.
When talking to CRE Support about something else I asked them about this template provider, and they told me that 'their templates are based on old code and don't work right with the new cart'. When I asked him who offers the best templates, he said noone-- best to build your own. I'd prefer to save a bit of time though and pay someone for their services, but I want proper function and good looks. Just haven't found it yet.
Bottom line-- is this the typical templating experience? Or is there a rockin' template service out there that offers fully functional templates that look great and work like they are supposed to first try?
