I'm really new to CRE, so I apologise if this is a really simple and stupid question. Is there a way for me to set it up so that I don’t need to put a weight in to my item description, and have a set postage charge?

Example – Items to the UK - £1.99 plus 50p for each extra item

Rest of world - £2.60 plus 50p for each extra item.

I’ll be using Paypal.

Thanks in advance, and sorry again if this isn't the right place and if this is a stupud question :)

Hello SWS,

Good questions and right place!

Weight - yes you'll want to include a weight for your products ... if weight is left as zero, the cart will consider them 'virtual' products (ie downloadables) and will skip the shipping page altogether. It's very easy to set a weight of 1 for all products via a sql statement in the database.

Per item shipping + extra per additional item isn't something that is available 'out of the box' with Cre BUT it certainly is very possible to do. And you can specify 'zones' as you mention (eg one rate for UK, another for EU, another for Rest of Planet, etc.)

I don't think it'll matter which payment module you use - shipping modules usually just create a total figure for shipping and adds it to the order total. You might need to find out if VAT needs to be charged on shipping as well (and shown) ... it does for the UK music company I work for.

Incidentally have you checked out some of the options around for payment gateways? Maybe consider the volume of business and per transaction charge ... sometimes PP is quite expensive as they charge based on total monthly value of transactions (eg 50 x £30 orders = £1.22 per order = £61) for the PP Standard.

Take a look at Sagepay f'rinstance (< 1000 transactions / quarter, flat rate of £20) ... and they accept PP too.

Cheers,
Simon

Hi SnoWhiteSally,

If you are looking for a low-cost payment gateway along side or in place of Paypal please consider our EcomMerchant solution. We offer some of the lowest charges in the UK today but with no compromise on service or security. We are PCI Level 1 accredited and all staff are based within our head office in Stockport. All staff are technically trained so you will never be dealing with call centre operators if you contact us.

EcomMerchant = £10 for 300 transactions/month then 10p per trans thereafter

SagePay = £20 for 333 transactions/month then 10p per trans thereafter

Worldpay = £19.95 for 350 transactions/month then 28p per trans thereafter

Paypoint = £20.00 for 350 transactions/month then 15p per trans thereafter

So, as you can see, the monthly cost is 50% less then most providers and you still get 300 transactions included. As with the above gateways, you will need an Internet Merchant Account to use the EcomMerchant service.

If you would like to know more about our service drop me a PM or click the link in my signature.

Kind regards,

Simon

... not that I work for Sagepay or get anything from promoting then ... just use have clients that use em...
for £10 more a month you can get card AND Paypal processing through Sagepay without having to run a separate Paypal module (and all the hassle that comes with that.)

Simon

Not that there is anything wrong in you recommending SagePay, if you have had good experience with them - but have you read about the problems they have been experiencing lately and the campaign groups on Facebook etc for disgruntled customers?

We have had a surge of customers leaving SagePay to come to us and I know quite a few other gateways than have experienced the same surge. Plenty of unhappy customers on their books looking to move...

Heheh, well, given that a certain % always complain, it may be a sign of being too successful too.
Always greener over the fence eh ... incidentally, you offering Paypal processing yet?

Hi Simon

Of course every company will face complaints - that is the nature of the beast - but when a collective group gets together to discuss a problem it can prove very difficult to persuade them to stay I would imagine. I say imagine as I wouldn't know... we have never had the kind of problems they are facing ;) From what I am hearing, they have never been able to offer the same level of service/support since changing from Protx. It is a shame that Sage decided to bring their own people in (so I heard) as it was certainly running perfectly well under those guys.

Had another switcher from SP a few mins ago - a CRE Loaded user in fact...

No PayPal integration as yet but it is on the list. Once we have sufficient demand for it we will focus our efforts on developing this for our gateway. Goes without saying you will be the first to know when we add it :)
